Is Mérida safe? What a local host wants you to know
It’s probably the question we get most from people who have never been to Yucatán and are deciding whether to come: “is Mérida safe?”. Let’s answer it directly, no brochure talk, because it’s a legitimate question and deserves an honest answer from someone who actually lives here.

The short answer
Yes. Mérida is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in Mexico, and it’s common to see families, women traveling alone, and older adults walking at night through Downtown and Paseo Montejo without much concern. That reputation isn’t a coincidence or marketing —it’s the reason so many people from abroad have moved here in recent years.
What that looks like in practice
Walking at night through Paseo Montejo, Downtown, or neighborhoods like Santiago or La Mejorada is normal and common. Markets, restaurants, and events like the Tuesday Remembranzas Musicales in Santiago are full of local families, not just tourists. That, more than any statistic, is the most honest sign of how comfortable the city feels to the people who actually live in it.
Common sense still applies
That said, safe doesn’t mean zero precautions —the same ones you’d apply in any city: keep an eye on your belongings in crowded places, use authorized taxis or transportation apps at night rather than walking alone through areas you don’t know, and the usual traveler’s common sense. It’s not a long list because, honestly, it doesn’t need to be.
Our recommendation as hosts

And if you have any specific question before deciding —about a neighborhood, a schedule, a particular area— write to us directly. We’d rather answer it ourselves than have you guess.
